When Professional Growth Begins with a Pause
Professional growth is often associated with doing more—taking on new responsibilities, pursuing promotions, building expertise, and constantly moving forward.
But sometimes, moving forward requires a pause.
This was the thinking behind “Refresh & Refocus,” a three-day seminar jointly organised by CedarRise Initiative for Human Development and Women in Leadership and Law (WILL) for female lawyers in Enugu. Held from August 26–28, 2024, at Nike Lake Resort Hotel, the seminar created space for participants to step away from the demands of their professional lives and take stock of where they were, where they wanted to go, and what they needed to get there.
The programme was deliberately broader than a conventional professional training. Participants discussed career advancement and workplace dynamics alongside time management, resilience, financial literacy and self-care. The sessions focused on practical questions: How do you manage competing demands? How do you remain effective under pressure? How do you build relationships that support your career? And how do you pursue professional ambition without losing sight of yourself?
Much of the learning happened through conversation. Group discussions, role plays and reflective exercises allowed participants to bring their own experiences into the room, compare perspectives and learn from challenges that are often difficult to discuss in formal professional settings.
There was also room to simply unwind.
Sports, a cineforum and a karaoke lunch provided a break from the more serious conversations and gave participants the opportunity to connect outside their usual professional roles. In a setting designed for both reflection and relaxation, networking became less formal and conversations became more personal.
By the end of the three days, participants described the experience as “refreshing, eye-opening, and well thought out.” More importantly, they left with clearer goals, renewed confidence and practical strategies they could take back into their professional and personal lives.
The experience reinforced an idea that is easy to overlook in conversations about women's professional development: sometimes, creating room to pause is itself a form of support.
“Refresh & Refocus” was not about stepping away from ambition. It was about creating the space to consider what that ambition should look like—and how to pursue it with greater clarity, resilience and balance.
